Garden Sentiments
Sue Nevler
Do we view gardens differently depending on our age? I think of 4 year old Henry’s fascination with a dead mole in the garden. He was riveted, life and death. Now, I find myself viewing gardens through a more sentimental lens, appreciating plants which produce a memory or a feeling, just as much as seeing design or form.
Perhaps this does come with age. I see gifts from friends long gone, nods to great gardens and gardeners, tributes to beloved gardens past, or revered landscapes. Mostly now, I see the shared presence/presents of treasured folks in quiet natural splendor. I hope you see this sentimental history in our public gardens too. Here are just a few favorite garden histories.
