Mukai Farm & Garden
Founded by Issei pioneer B.D. Mukai in 1926 as a strawberry farm, Mukai Farm & Garden today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places with our rare heritage home, Japanese Garden, and Barreling Plant. Open and free to the public, we celebrate Vashon Island’s Japanese American and agrarian heritage.
The Japanese Garden: Designed and installed during the 1930’s by Kuni Mukai, a Japanese immigrant, her “hill garden” features extensive rockwork, plantings, and a surrounding pond. In the fall of 2018, the 90-year-old pond was restored. Landscaping in the North Garden, hill plantings and lawn restoration completed in June 2019.
Come visit—stroll, walk, picnic, tour, attend an event or party. Learn about Vashon’s Japanese American and agricultural heritage at this important island treasure. Mukai is adjacent to Island Center Forest for winding wooded walks to Mukai Pond.
The grounds are open dawn till dusk every day of the year for self- guided tours. The house with historic displays of over a hundred years of Japanese presence and contributions on Vashon Island is open to visitors during events such as our annual Haiku Festival and Japan Festival, and during open houses (check our website for the current schedule).
