Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden

Step back in time into a 19th century garden on the grounds of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, into the only botanical garden operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Carl S. English Jr. was hired as an assistant gardener in 1931 and worked for 43 years to grow a garden of unique and diverse plants from around the world. He developed the lawns and sparse plantings into a sprawling 7 acre English-style landscape, with shrubs and trees blooming at any time of year. In 1976, the garden was dedicated in Carl’s honor and became officially recognized as a cultural landscape that contributes to the historic district of the Locks.

Open hours from 7am to 9pm. Visitor Center hours vary by season. Tours available by request and at recreation.gov. Plants sold from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day.

The Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden is one of those historical treasures that resonates with our gardens today as much as it did when it was being created. The grounds are filled with climate adaptable plants as well as rarities seldom found in this region. It is exciting to see so many PNW and Northern California natives as mature, beautiful specimens complimented by choice trees and shrubs acquired from around the world.

[I]t is the living trees, shrubs and herbs that speak more eloquently of his quiet devotion to the acquisition and growing of plants from far places. Carl English shared seeds, plants and knowledge with an international acquaintance of plantsmen, thus enhancing his own ability to bring interesting and unusual plants to the Gardens.

Under [Carl’s] supervision, and with his many personal contributions of seeds and plants, the park has become a botanical garden in miniature, for the informally planted beds and borders embrace an extensive collection of plants, chiefly of outstanding trees and shrubs from all over the world.
