Powellswood Infrared Photography

David Jacobs is a fine art photographer based in Tacoma Washington

Gardening is my vocation and photography my artistic expression; I am a photographer first and a gardener second. Through my work, I aim to challenge viewers to experience place, nature, and stewardship in meaningful—and sometimes unexpected—ways. My infrared photography explores the relationship between vegetation, form, structure, and atmosphere through distinctive tonalities and textures, with minimal post-processing.

My work moves beyond conventional garden photography, which often emphasizes botanical identification, seasonal color, or the presentation of a designed landscape. Instead, I explore how a recognizable place can become unfamiliar, inviting viewers to reconsider the atmosphere, structure, and emotional character of a cultivated landscape.

At Powellswood, I captured these ten frames, along with many others, exploring the garden from a variety of perspectives. From intimate botanical details to broader views of the landscape, each photograph reveals a different relationship between vegetation, form, and atmosphere, offering a distinctive interpretation of the garden through color infrared photography.
