The Carkeek Gardens

The Carkeek Gardens were designed to surround the Environmental Learning Center in 1996 by Russell Link, noted landscape architect and wildlife biologist. The gardens have grown to an acre in size and are joined by gravel paths that border a coastal forest, meadow, and the park’s six-mile trail system.

Twelve themed beds, from the Shady Woodlands to the Prairie-style Garden, were designed to show how the backyard gardener can combine native plants with familiar nursery specimens to help support bird populations and pollination; providing food, shelter, and nesting materials. The wide variety of plants thrive without fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides- protecting the Piper’s Creek Watershed and salmon habitat.

The Carkeek Gardens joined the King County group of ten Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens in 2015 and is the largest among them. The Master Gardener volunteers, as well as community volunteers, maintain these native plant gardens year round.

Carkeek – Visitor

I have been walking through Carkeek Park for years and always begin my walk at the Demonstration Gardens. I love seeing the personalities of the garden beds change with the seasons: the lush, native plants blossoming in spring, and the fulsome growth and changing colors in the fall.
